About The Founder

Rahim Shaik

Rahim Shaik, the founder of Need Base India, has been working in the areas of child care and protection for more than 15 years now. As a member of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) at Bangalore between 2007 and 2010, he has been exposed to the challenging circumstances under which children tend to live on the streets. He was nominated by the Department of Women and Child, Karnataka State.
With more than a decade’s experience of managing projects at Sathi, an NGO working towards rescuing and rehabilitating runaway children, Rahim had a strong orientation towards the issues faced by children much before getting nominated as a member of the Child Welfare Committee. The stint at CWC gave him a better understanding and knowledge of using the existing legal and regulatory framework to rehabilitate street children. Show More

Summary

Need Base India (A foundation for Child Care and Development) is a non profit organization started with the intention to work on issues of care, protection and education for the street and vulnerable children and children out of school. It was setup in Dec 2009.
Need Base India works with those families who do not have the capacity in bringing-up their children for whatever may be the reason. Under such circumstances one cannot expect that the children will be safe and also opportunity for keeping the child and family together may not be possible by considering the child rights perspective. So to ensure care and protection, we are running three residential centers at Bangalore in the Govt. School premises. We are operating Rainbow Home for girls at Jalahalli Village, Sneh Ghar forboys at Shanthinagar and Lakshya Udaan Home for boys at Siddhapura, behind Lal bagh, Bangalore.
In addition to this, we are running two Bridge School Programs for the out of school children by covering 100 children in two locations. One program at Govt. School, Rachenahalli and another at Govt. School, Jeedi Mara, Bangalore. Overall we are helping around 250 children through our project in each year.

Every Child in School

The project Every Child in School was started in June 2014, with the aim that every child should have the opportunity to attend school. It is a fundamental Right of the child to go to school. A lot of children with a difficult background are already enrolled in such projects but the number of children who are out of school is still very high. There are around 3 to 4 lakhs children out of school and this should be an issue of concern for all of us. We are planning to work in Karnataka and in other states to put all the children in school. Currently, we have admitted around 200 children in schools. Currently we have identified 100 children out of school in the Bangalore and running Bridge School.

Virtual Class Setup

We wanted to support Rural Children to get Quality Education with the help of the Dept of Education and eVidyaloka organization.On a pilot basis, we began a virtual class set-up in the Government School at Hanumasagar Town, Koppal District, Karnataka State in partnership with eVidhyaloka, who are the pioneers in the field of virtual class set-up. The Govt. School has allotted one class room to install the equipment to run the program. In the same class every day three hours of teaching is being carried out by the volunteers to the program. The volunteers teach according to the school syllabus for the students from class 6th to 8th std. Overall 100 children have been benefitted through this program.

LAKSHYA UDAAN HOME FOR BOYS

Lakshya Udaan home for boys is a project run for the rehabilitation of drug addicted and street children living in different scenarios. These children are drug addicts and spend maximum time on the streets. The genesis of this programme can be traced to Need Base India’s “Urban Deprived Children” programme. Initially 45 children were admitted to our School Motivation camps held under the Urban Deprived Children programme. The rehabilitation process starts with a School Motivation Camp, where good values and the importance of leading a good life are taught. Thereafter, depending upon the learning outcomes of the children, they are admitted to schools. It’s a one year project funded by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). Lakshya Udaan Home is located in the Government school premises of Siddhapura gate, Lalbagh, Bangalore. The residential home currently houses 34 underprivileged boys, giving them care, protection and education.

New Boy's Home at Panathur school

It is a residential home started for underprivileged boys of street children, runaways, orphans and so on. It is currently located in the Government school premises of Panathur, Marathalli. All the children are from disfunctional families and some are orphans and beggars. The home houses currently for 30 boys offering care, protection and education for the boys.

Rainbow home for girls

Rainbow Home is a residential project providing a place of security and basic comfort for the vulnerable girls on the streets. This project is run in the Government school premises at Jalahalli Village, Bangalore. It was started in Feb 2011. There are 100 girls staying in our Rainbow home. It is a long term project and very closely associated with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), which is an Indian Government programme aimed at the universalisation of elementary education. The children enjoy all the benefits of being inside a regular school with its activities, interaction with the better privileged peer groups and studying at the regular school, the rough and tumble of normal school life and the friendly interaction with other children of varying backgrounds, creeds and castes. This positive environment enable each child to grow and reach her full potential. We provide care, protection and comprehensive education including life skill training for the girls.

SNEHGHAR FOR BOYS

SnehGhar is another residential home for underprivileged boy’s viz. Street children, runaway children, orphans and so on. It is currently located in the Government School premises, of Akkithimmanahalli, Shantinagar, Bangalore. The main objective of this program is to help such children to give up street life and become a part of the mainstream life. We intend to evolve a Rehabilitation framework with the help of this program which can be replicated and scaled up by collaborating with other civil society and NGO partners. The home houses currently for 50 boys offering care, protection and bridge teaching for the boys.
