Ashraya Trust

The three founding members of Ashraya, Shanti Chacko, the late Nomita Chandy and the late Rama Ananth, were instrumental in laying the foundation and giving direction to the growth of Ashraya.
Ashraya continues to be committed to and actively supporting the cause of women and children through its present projects with the support of its committee members, a wide circle of donors, volunteers and well wishers.

In recognition of the pioneering and impactful work of Ashraya and her work in the field of social welfare, Mrs. Nomita Chandy, the then Secretary of Ashraya, was awarded a Padma Shri in 2011 by the Govt of India .

Summary

ASHRAYA- meaning ‘SHELTER’ is a non–governmental organization founded and registered in India, in 1982. Our vision is to extend holistic solutions to families to improve their quality of life, and we do this by focusing on women and children who are currently amongst the most vulnerable sections of our society.

Crèche program:
The children are equipped to join formal school after attending the crèches for a year.
Each crèche is staffed by a Bal-Sevika trained teacher, assistant teacher and helper.
To ensure the children maintain their health and are meeting their developmental goals we provide a daily nutritious lunch and porridge and organize regular doctor’s visits with periodic height/weight checks.
Quarterly Parent Teacher meetings nsure that the parents are aware ofof the progress their children have made. We also use this opportunity to sensitize the parents on issues related to hygiene, health and the importance of educating their children.
We annually celebrate New Year and Diwali with all the crèche children and staff.
We regularly conduct workshops for the crèche staff to train them in innovative methods of teaching and sensitize them to different communication strategies to address the needs of our diverse groups of children.
